Job Description

Totran Transportation Services is an independently owned and operated Canadian heavy haul specialized company operating across North America from our head offices in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada, and has an Office in Conroe, Texas USA just north of Houston.

Since our beginnings in 2006, we have aspired to be a center of excellence in transportation, and are answering niche customer needs for the movement of project cargo for all different types of industries that require heavy haul transport.

We are seeking a General Manager to join our team as we continue to grow!

Position Summary:

The General Manager is responsible for the smooth functioning and coordination of the company’s various teams. Working in a well-maintained office environment, the General Manager is required to perform a broad range of duties, is accountable for the overall success of the terminal, and is expected to create a positive and safe working environment that encourages creativity and productivity.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily operations of the department and its personnel.
  • Management of Equipment - planning what equipment will be used for which loads.
  • Be aware of drivers and their individual skill levels, their schedules, holidays, etc.
  • Knowledge of all our trucks and their capabilities, all our trailers, their capacities and how they can be utilized.
  • Knowledge of where any piece of equipment is at any given time and what job it is to be scheduled on
  • Work closely with the maintenance manager for arranging / scheduling Equipment repairs and regular preventive maintenance.
  • Coordinate repair facilities near project sites to ensure repairs / preventive maintenance can be completed on the road.
  • Participating in the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of operations staff and drivers as well as dismissal of same, when appropriate
  • Make decisions about business policies, manage risks, and resolve employee problems.
  • Ensure Operations Personnel are informed of the policies about the functioning of the department and make sure that all concerned are adhering to them.
  • Assign tasks to different personnel-including Load Scheduling & Routing, Dispatch, Permits, Load Supervision, Job Costing, Driver Pay, incident reporting and others as needed.
  • Maintain regular communication with management on prominent issues.
  • Prepare reports for management, take, and analyze reports from subordinates about various projects in progress.
  • Attend daily operations meetings and work with the Dispatch team on where the equipment is and what is needed for brokered loads.
  • Communication with Sales regarding upcoming potential work
  • Maintaining a proper level of discipline and adhering to employee relations procedures.
  • Work with Human Resources to report holidays and absenteeism of Operations personnel. 
  • Arranging cover due to increased workload or illness.
  • Perform regular physical inspections on the company’s grounds, buildings, equipment, and operations; identify hazards and incidents of regulatory non-compliance and recommend corrective measures. 
  • Ensure that drivers work in a safe and secure manner and that we conduct our business in a safe manner by enforcing corporate policies and bringing to the attention of management any deficiencies in safety or security and making recommendations where appropriate.
  • Performs dispatching and other operations duties under management’s direction.
  • Maintain records related to delivery and customer receipt.
  • Maintain cordial working relationships with drivers.
  • Record all delivery-related expenses.
  • Manage customer complaints or direct to the appropriate department.
  • Identify any operational and regulatory risks and then escalate as appropriate.
  • Ensure that all aspects of Health & Safety are adhered to.
  • Any additional duties and responsibilities as reasonably required by senior management.
